Frequently asked questions
1. What kind of bread works best?
Thick slices work best like Brioche or Japanese Milk Bread. They soak up the custard without falling apart.
2. Can I use gluten-free bread?
Yes, but choose a gluten-free bread that’s slightly thicker and not too soft so it doesn’t break while soaking.
3. Can I prepare the custard mixture ahead of time?
Yes. You can mix it a few hours earlier and keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready to cook.
4. How long should the bread soak?
Just a few seconds on each side. You want it coated but not overly soaked so it stays soft inside and crisp on the outside.
5. Can I use cream cheese instead of Mascarpone?
Yes but it won’t taste like Tiramisu anymore.
6. How do I keep the French Toast from getting soggy?
Don’t soak the bread too long and cook it on medium heat so it cooks through without burning.
7. Can I make the Mascarpone topping in advance?
Yes. You can prepare it a few hours earlier and keep it covered in the fridge. Give it a quick stir before serving so it’s smooth and creamy again.
Ingredients you will need for this recipe
For the French Toast
Brioche bread or Milk Bread: These types of bread are soft, slightly sweet and they soak up the custard really well without falling apart.
Milk: This makes the custard mixture creamy and helps the bread cook softly inside. Any milk works, even oat or almond milk.
Granulated sugar: Adds a little sweetness to the custard. You can use brown sugar instead for a deeper flavor.
Egg: We are going to use one large egg in this recipe. If your eggs are super small, make sure to use two!
Vanilla extract: You can use vanilla paste or skip it if you don’t have any.
Cinnamon: Adds a cozy spice note. It’s optional, but it gives the French toast a little extra flavor.
For the frosting
Mascarpone cheese: This gives the topping that classic Tiramisu taste.
Granulated sugar: Sweetens the Mascarpone frosting. You can use powdered sugar or brown sugar instead.
Whipping cream: Makes the topping light and smooth.
Vanilla bean paste or ground vanilla: Adds a deeper vanilla flavor. Vanilla extract works too.
Extras
Butter (for cooking): Helps the French toast get golden and crisp on the outside.
Cocoa powder (for dusting): Gives the final Tiramisu touch on top.
Ladyfingers soaked in coffee: These bring the real Tiramisu vibe.
